Say hello to Lodestar! by Emil Björklund

Just a quick post to tell the world that the Lab1 team have decided on a name! After months of agonizing discussion, hundreds (literally!) of suggestions from us and others, research into existing products, clever puns and overused clichés, we finally settled.

(If you need a quick background on what the project is about, check the blog post “EcoElectricity, the first project in Lab1″, as well as the other posts on this blog. Basically it’s about hooking a smart electricity meter wirelessly to a display gadget, a cloud database and a web app where you can keep track of your energy usage as well as interact and discuss with other users.)

The project is called Lodestar from now on. According to various dictionaries and encyclopaedias, a lodestar means a guiding star used for navigation. A more contemporary use is in the sense of a role model, an example to follow. This fits perfectly in line with the usage and reasoning behind our product: the light from the gadget display is sort of a guiding star for your electricity usage, and the same goes for the various forms of visualizations that you access via the web. In the social aspect of becoming more aware of usage patterns, both in yourself and others—individually and aggregated, you may find, or act as, a role model for using less energy.

Apart from the general meaning of the word, there’s also the “load”-pronounciation hidden in the word (as in “electricity load”), and within that, “Low” as in lower consumption. So yes, it may contain traces of pun, if you’re allergic to that. :-)

So, what do you think?

Haha I like it!

robin engström

And it’s very similar to the american country group Lonestar as well.

Robin: Oh dear – we might get invited to play gigs in texas: hilarity will surely ensue. :-)

Like your idea very much. Mostly because today it’s too hard to track your energy consumtion using current standards. For example, when moving into our last apartment, the energy could only be measured in two ways:

1. Checking your electricity bill, delivered once a month. Which of course you never remembered.

2. Digging into the electricity box, locked up and placed about 8″ above the ground. Once inside, you can see your current consumtion level. If, of course, you understand what something like “54390004″ means.

This calls for a change. Perhaps Lodestar could be it?

PS. “Lone Starr” was the main character in Mel Brook’s movie Space Balls from 1987. I will probably think of him every time I see or hear about this product… Great name :)

Max: Definitely some good points there. We’ve been doing quite a bit of research into this (as have many others, both competitors and university researchers), and it seems like electricity companies are getting better. The smart meters placed in most homes in these days is a step in the right direction, but Lodestar places the data in the hands of the user in a more manageable way.

Also: I had completely forgotten about Lone Starr! That movie was hilarious, at least as I remember it! :-)
